Our Impact by the Numbers

Since 2006, Dorothy Day House has been Memphis's answer to a gap no one else was filling. Every number below represents a family that stayed together — and a community that showed up to make it possible.

Our Community of supporters

650+ Volunteers who served with DDH last year

2,000+ Volunteer hours contributed annually

2,000+ Individuals who donated in-kind items last year

Dorothy Day House does not run on government funding. We run on people. The volunteers who show up week after week, the donors who give what they can, and the community organizations that believe families deserve better — they are the reason this works.

How we’re funded

66% Individual donors

12% Businesses

11% Community organizations

9% Foundations

2% Religious organizations

Every dollar given to Dorothy Day House goes directly toward keeping families together and moving them toward stability. We are privately and charitably funded — which means our work is only possible because of you.

Families

175+ Families housed since we opened our doors in 2006

20 Families housed annually across our three homes

800+ Shelter requests received last year alone

That last number matters. For every family we were able to welcome home last year, more than 40 others reached out, and we could not say yes. We are not able to serve everyone who needs us — but every gift, every volunteer hour, and every in-kind donation moves us closer.

From the people who show up

“Being a House Manager is hard some days — but when parents reach their goals, the hard work is worth it. They can be proud of what they've achieved, and I feel honored to be part of that journey.”

— Beth Ryan, House Manager at Dorothy Day House

“As a mother and a police officer, I couldn't imagine choosing between shelter and my child. The DDH is a blessing. I want to help however I can.”

— Dallas, Dorothy Day House Vounteer
