"...Very different"

Day by Day

A note from our Executive Director

The DDH staff frequently talks about how we personalize our service to homeless families because no two families are alike. They each come with their own traumas, strengths, weaknesses and personal goals. Even the make-up of the families we are currently serving is a reminder about how very different they are:

A father and his six year old son

A mother and her 7 month old baby girl

A mother and her nine year old son

A couple with their two teenage daughters

A pregnant mother with her twelve year old son and 2 year old daughter

A mother with her seven year old daughter and her 2 year old daughter

Each of them has their own story and came to us from a unique background. Our job is to meet them where they are and help them move forward. We are grateful that you trust us to help them with the care, concern and accountability that they need.
As you can imagine, keeping everyone on track and moving forward is quite a challenge. Please keep our families and our staff in your prayers.

News Brief

The Kresge Foundation

We are excited to announce that the Dorothy Day House was selected by The Kresge Foundation to join the Memphis NextGen initiative! Five local organizations were chosen for their commitment to advancing the social and economic mobility of children and families living with low incomes.
Members of the cohort are awarded a $250,000 grant and will also participate in a two-year learning and collaboration program. Click here to read more about the program.

Memphis Chicken & Beer Fest Success

On August 3rd, we had 83 amazing volunteers come out to the 2nd annual Memphis Chicken and Beer Fest! From scanning tickets and pouring beer, to replenishing ice and fetching water, we could not have done it without volunteers and DDH Staff.

We are grateful to the many people who attended the event in support of the Dorothy Day House.

Thinking ahead about Christmas...

We are gearing up for our Christmas Gift Program so that you can help us make Christmas special for the Dorothy Day House families!

First, we are in need of sponsors who will purchase items for a child or adult. We will provide a wish list that will help guide your purchases. Registering to sponsor adults and children will begin in October.
Second, we need gift cards for Walmart, Target and Visa so that our house managers can take our resident parents shopping for their own children's Christmas gifts. This will make it possible for these parents to have pride and dignity on Christmas morning knowing that they selected gifts for their children! We are accepting gift cards from now until December 1st.
Keep an eye on our social media and newsletter for more information.
Will you help us to serve our families this year?

Thanks to all!

Our thanks to all the individuals and organizations who helped provide school supplies, uniforms and backpacks for our Dorothy Day House students. It is always fun to watch the excitement that builds as we distribute school supplies to these children who have had to do with so little in the past. We were able to provide complete school supplies for 35 students! Feeling good about being ready for school is important to everyone, but especially to children who have so little.

Our special thanks to Wendy Powell (center) and the Happy Worth Day program for providing a Back to School celebration for our resident families on Friday, August 9th!

Renovation of our third house is moving along smoothly. Framing is finished and the electricians and plumbers have begun their work. If you drive by, you'll see that they are busy tuck-pointing (brick repair) right now. It is exciting to see the house take shape before our eyes!
